Electrician answering service that asks about heat, smoke and sparks first
Short answer
An electrician answering service picks up your calls when you’re on a ladder or inside a wall. Ours is 100% AI: it answers as your company, says plainly that it’s an AI and asks first about danger: heat, smoke, sparks or buzzing. Danger signs get your safety line and an urgent alert to your on-call electrician; a breaker that keeps tripping gets the first open slot; an EV charger or panel upgrade becomes a booked estimate. You get a summary of every call, and nobody is ever told to open the panel.

When electrical calls come at the wrong time
It’s 5:45 on a Thursday in Greenville. You’re on a ladder in an office ceiling, finishing a lighting retrofit, both hands on wire nuts. Your phone is in the tool bag at the bottom of the ladder.
In the last hour it has rung for a homeowner whose kitchen and living room just went dark, a builder who needs your rough-in date, someone pricing an EV charger, and a woman whose panel is buzzing and warm. Three of those can wait until tomorrow. One can’t, and from the top of a ladder you have no way of knowing which.
How the call goes
-
It greets the caller as your shop
The AI says: “Bluewire Electric, this is AI Receptionist, the AI assistant. What’s going on?”
-
It asks about danger before anything else
Smoke, sparks, a burning smell, an outlet or panel that’s hot or buzzing. Any yes gets your safety line, read word for word, and an urgent alert to your on-call electrician.
The AI says: “Do you see smoke or sparks, smell burning, or is an outlet or the panel warm or buzzing?”
-
It finds out how much is out
One room, half the house, or the whole street. If the neighbors are dark too, your line points the caller to the utility and no truck is sent.
The AI says: “Is the power out in the whole home, and do your neighbors have power?”
-
It asks what kind of job it is
A repair, an install such as an EV charger, a panel upgrade or a generator, or work for a builder. Installs become an estimate visit; builders reach whoever schedules your crews.
The AI says: “Is this a repair, or something new, like a charger or a panel upgrade?”
-
It takes the details and routes the call
Name, address, callback number, then your rules: put through, alerted by email at once, or booked and confirmed only once the booking is saved. For estimate calls it follows our contractor estimate request script; at night, the after-hours triage protocol.
The AI says: “This is urgent, so I’m putting you through to our on-call electrician.”
What counts as urgent
Here is the urgent list we bring to an electrical contractor. You decide what stays.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Smoke, sparks or burning smell; outlet or panel hot or buzzing | Your safety line (911 if there’s smoke or fire), then the on-call electrician now |
| Power line down outside | 911 and the utility, per your line; flagged in your summary |
| Medical equipment at home on a circuit that’s out | Urgent: on-call electrician now |
| Part of the home without power, neighbors have it | Urgent or first slot, by your rule |
| Whole street out | Your line pointing to the utility; no truck sent |
| Breaker that keeps tripping, no heat or smell | First open slot, or same day by your rule |
| EV charger, panel upgrade, generator, remodel wiring | Estimate booked, or a message for the office |
What it never says on these calls
- To reset a breaker, open the panel or touch anything that’s warm.
- That something is “safe to use” until an electrician has seen it.
- A price for a panel upgrade, a charger install or a service call you haven’t approved.
- That a permit or an inspection will be done by a certain date.
What you decide
- Your danger signs, and the exact safety lines for each, including the 911 line.
- Partial outages at night: a call-out tonight, or the first slot in the morning.
- Medical equipment: whether a caller who depends on it is always urgent.
- Who’s on call, and who’s the backup.
- Estimates: which installs it books, and whether it asks about the home’s age or panel size.
We set it up the way you want and you approve the final version.
Why this works for electricians
Our call protocols come from nearly two decades of running phone reception for small businesses, and on an electrical call the first question is the one that keeps people safe. It escalates real emergencies: heat, smoke and buzzing reach your on-call electrician tonight, while a tripping breaker waits for morning. It never promises what you don’t: “safe to use” is a judgment for a licensed electrician on site, so the AI never makes it, and never talks anyone into opening a panel.
The reasoning is on our method. Builders who call you for rough-in dates have their own side of the story on the answering service for contractors page; every other trade is on home services.
What it costs
This electrician call answering service bills per answered call, whether it’s a ten-second “are you open Saturday?” or a careful call about a hot panel. There’s no monthly fee on Pay As You Go, just $0.99 per answered call; the 50-Call Plan gives you 50 calls for $29 a month, then $0.69 per extra call. Every plan is on pricing.

Questions electricians ask
Can an electrician answering service tell an emergency from a routine call?
Yes, because the protocol asks the danger questions first: smoke, sparks, a burning smell, heat or buzzing. Then it asks how much of the home is out and whether the neighbors have power. Those answers, set against your rules, decide whether your on-call electrician hears about it tonight or the call is booked for morning.
Will it tell callers to reset the breaker?
No, unless you approve that exact line, and many electricians would rather it didn’t. It never suggests opening the panel or touching anything warm. The only instructions it gives are your safety lines, read word for word, such as leaving the house and calling 911 if there’s smoke.
Can it book EV charger and panel upgrade estimates?
Yes. It takes the job type, the address and the best time for a visit, and books the estimate into the slots you allow, confirming only once the booking is saved. You can add questions, such as where the car parks or how old the home is. More on appointment scheduling.
Does an electrician virtual receptionist handle calls from builders?
Yes. Builders and general contractors usually need a date, such as a rough-in or a final. The AI takes the job address and what they need, and puts the call through to whoever schedules your crews or passes it on as a message. It never commits to a date your calendar doesn’t show.
I’m a one-truck shop. What does an AI receptionist for electrician work change?
The call about the hot panel reaches you on the ladder; the call about the EV charger waits in your summary until you’re down. Before, both went to voicemail and you chose which to call back, often after the homeowner had called someone else. As an electrician phone answering service on Pay As You Go, it has no monthly fee, so a slow January costs you very little.
