Use case
Answering service pay per call: no monthly fee, just the calls it answers
Short answer
An answering service with pay per call pricing charges you for the calls it answers, not for a bundle you might not use. AIReceptionistGo is a 100% AI receptionist, and its Pay As You Go plan works that way: no monthly fee, just $0.99 for each call it answers.
Your calls are picked up around the clock, in English or Spanish. A quiet month costs little, and when your calls grow, a plan with calls included costs you less.

A handful of calls a month, and no reason to pay for more
A fictional example. Ana Ruiz runs Ruiz Bookkeeping on her own. Most months she gets eight to twelve calls, more in tax season. At 2:40 on a Tuesday she’s across the table from a client, and her phone buzzes. It’s a new business owner looking for help with quarterly taxes.
She can’t answer. Voicemail feels like a lost client, and a monthly answering plan built for a busy office feels like paying for calls she’ll never get. What she wants is simple: someone to answer that call properly, and a bill that matches what actually happened.
That’s who a pay as you go answering service is for.

How a pay as you go bill adds up
A pay as you go phone answering service bill has two parts, and nothing else:
-
The monthly fee:
$0
Your line is still covered 24/7, with your protocol set up and ready.
-
Each call answered:
$0.99
No calls are included, so you pay for each one as it comes in.
To estimate your month, multiply the number of calls you usually get by $0.99. A month with 10 calls comes to $9.90. A month with no calls costs nothing.
No minutes are counted. A long call from a confused new client costs the same as a quick question about your hours. There’s no extra rate for nights, weekends or holidays, and no charge for a Spanish-speaking caller.

What each call gets for the price
Paying per call doesn’t mean a lighter service. A call answering service pay as you go on Pay As You Go runs every call through the same protocol as the bigger plans:
It picks up on the first ring, gives your business name and tells the caller it’s AI.
It asks what your trade needs: for a bookkeeper, the type of business, the service wanted and any deadline.
It books appointments in your calendar, in the slots you’ve opened. If the calendar doesn’t respond, the request is kept as pending, never confirmed.
It transfers the call to you when your rules say so, and takes a message if you don’t pick up.
It filters spam and sales calls and marks them as such in your dashboard, so your summaries are about customers.
It sends you a summary of each call, with the recording and transcript in your dashboard.

No monthly fee, only the calls you get
On Pay As You Go, that call is one line on your monthly usage: $0.99, and a new client booked. Get started to have yours handled the same way, or listen to bookings from other trades on the AI receptionist demo page.
When to switch to a plan with calls included
Pay per call is the right fit while your volume is low or unpredictable. As calls add up, the per-call price on Pay As You Go starts to cost more than a plan that includes them. Here are the numbers to compare:
| Pay As You Go | 50-Call Plan | 100-Call Plan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0 | $29 | $49 |
| Calls included | None | 50 | 100 |
| Price per call beyond those included | $0.99 | $0.69 | $0.49 |
The test is easy. Work out your Pay As You Go total for a normal month. If it comes to more than $29, the 50-Call Plan costs you less, because its 50 included calls cover the same month for less. At 40 calls a month, for example, Pay As You Go comes to $39.60, more than the 50-Call Plan’s $29. The same logic applies higher up: from 79 calls a month, the 100-Call Plan costs less than the 50-Call Plan.
You can change plans whenever you like, so a busy tax season doesn’t lock you into a bigger plan for the rest of the year. All the plans are explained on pricing.
What you decide
You choose how the line works, and we set it up that way:
-
When calls reach the AI: all calls, only when you don’t pick up, or only after hours. You keep your number.
-
What it asks on every type of call, and what it must never say, such as fees you haven’t approved.
-
Which calls are transferred to you, and at what hours.
-
The slots it can book in your calendar.
The month’s running total sits in your dashboard, so the bill is never a guess.

The method behind each call you pay for
When you pay per call, each one should be worth it. Our call protocols come from nearly two decades of running phone reception for small businesses.
On this plan, two rules matter most:
-
Every call ends with what you need to act: who called, what for, how urgent, and what was done.
-
Real emergencies are escalated the way you choose, by email to the right person or by passing the call straight to them, so a low-volume line never means a slow response to what matters.

Per-call billing compared with per-minute plans and monthly minimums
Answering services usually bill in one of three ways. Here’s what each means for a business with few calls.
| Per-minute billing | Monthly minimum | AIReceptionistGo Pay As You Go | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Every minute on the line, sometimes rounded up | A set amount each month, used or not | Each call answered, and nothing else |
| A long call | Costs more | Eats into your minimum | Costs the same as a short one |
| A quiet month | Costs little | Costs the full minimum | Costs nothing |
| Nights and holidays | Sometimes a higher rate | Sometimes a higher rate | Same price |
| Contract | Varies | Often a minimum term | None |

Questions about an answering service pay per call plan
How does answering service per call pricing work?
You pay a set price for each call that’s answered, and nothing else. With AIReceptionistGo’s Pay As You Go plan there’s no monthly fee: each call answered costs $0.99. There are no minutes to count and no calls included, so your bill follows how many people actually called you that month.
What does an answering service cost per call?
It depends on the provider and on whether you’re billed by the call or by the minute. On our Pay As You Go plan, each call costs $0.99, with no monthly fee. On plans with calls included, each extra call costs less: $0.69 on the 50-Call Plan and $0.49 on the 100-Call Plan.
What happens in a month when nobody calls?
You pay nothing. There’s no monthly fee on Pay As You Go, your line stays covered, your protocol stays set up, and the first call of the next month is answered exactly like any other. That’s the point of a pay as you go telephone answering service: a slow month doesn’t cost you a bundle you didn’t use.
What counts as a call?
One incoming call your AI receptionist picks up and handles, however long it lasts: you’re never charged by the minute. If it’s transferred to you, it still counts as one call, and the time after the transfer isn’t charged. It appears in your usage the same day with its date, reason and summary, customer or not, so your invoice matches what you’ve already seen in your dashboard.
Is a virtual receptionist per call as good as a monthly plan?
Yes. A virtual receptionist per call on Pay As You Go uses the same AI, the same protocol for your industry and the same summaries as the bigger plans. Bookings, transfers, texts to the caller and urgent alerts work the same way. Plans differ in the calls they include and the price per extra call, never in how a call is handled.
Can I start on pay as you go and move up later?
Yes. You can start on Pay As You Go to see how many calls you really get, then move up once your per-call total passes the 50-Call Plan’s $29. With no contract, a busy tax season never ties you to a bigger plan for the rest of the year, and you can cancel whenever you like.
Pay for the calls you get
Count the calls you got last month. If it’s a handful, Pay As You Go is your plan: click “Get started”, tell us your hours and which calls should reach you, and we set up your protocol for free. Your first bill is the calls that actually came in, nothing more.
